Floating Piers

An idea originally conceived in 1970 by artists Christo and Jean-Claude, The Floating Piers were created in the Summer of 2014 by Christo and a team of helpers, who laid the floating fabric across the body of Lake Iseo in Italy.

The project lasted 16 days, and visitors were able to walk on the work of art from Sulzano across to Monte Isola, and then across to the island of San Paolo. The work of art was considered an extension of the street, and people were welcome to use the art as a temporary walk way between the islands.

Pushing the boundaries of traditional forms of painting, sculpture and architecture, Christo and Jean-Claude have changed the concept of public art, by creating temporary works that are transitory by design and used by the people.
